The Karelia Zoo is located in the Sortavala District of the Republic of Karelia. It was founded in 2011 and was originally known as Zoogreenpark.
The Karelia Zoo is the largest zoo in the Northwestern Region of Russia. The largest collection of animals from all over the world lives here in the pristine natural habitat.
The Zoo is home to over 500 animals and birds, including those listed in the Red Book for endangered species. The landscaped zoo occupies 30 hectares, which is approximately equal to some 60 football fields!
The distinguishing feature of the Karelia Zoo is the scale of its grounds and large enclosures for animals. The animals here live under the open sky next to the clean lakes and lush forests of Karelia. The excellent conditions created for the animals here have been made as close as possible to their natural habitats.
